Potholes
How do potholes become potholes?
Potholes start in cold temperatures when groundwater freezes and expands in cracks, even the tiniest of cracks. Once the ground thaws out and the temperature returns to above freezing, any pavement pushed up during the freeze remains raised. This causes a gap between the pavement and the ground. Vehicles driving over these gaps cause the street surface to crack and fall into that hollow space, creating a pothole.
